The challenge

Founded in 1999, Apemin Tusnad is one of the main mineral water bottlers in Romania. Its water comes from the depths of the Harghita volcanic mountains, and its high quality has been recognised since the 16th century. The company works in harmony with the environment and aims to provide the purest water to its consumers. To sustain this mission, it is crucial not only to protect the water straight from source, but also to ensure the strictest hygiene throughout the bottling process. The fact that today’s consumers are paying more attention to water quality and increasingly demanding “on-the-go” consumption are also factors we had to consider.

The solution

Apemin Tusnad invested in a new Sidel Combi carbonated and non-carbonated mineral water PET line. All the bottle forming, filling, and closing operations are performed in an integrated and fully automated system. So, the entire water bottling circuit – from the underground aquifer to the enclosed filling environment – is conducted in a controlled system with no external biological interaction.

The outcome

Thanks to Sidel’s Combi SF300 18,000 bph solution, and packaging innovations, such as lightweighting and a shorter neck finish, a smaller carbon footprint is now generated with average plastic consumption savings of 5% per bottle. Sidel’s BlendFill integrated filler and carbonator help Apemin Tusnad achieve its sustainability goals, too, as they require fewer components and functions and reduce CO2 consumption. The new complete PET line for carbonated and non-carbonated water can also handle various formats, from 0.5 L to 2.5 L, which has increased production capacity by up to 40%. Finally, the Sidel SF300 filler with its reduced filler enclosure, preserves the purity and mineral character of the water by keeping the filling environment compact and in consistent overpressure thanks to HEPA filters that ensure the highest hygiene standards.

Between 2019 and 2021, three Sidel and Serac Combis were installed at the bottling facility of Lesieur in Coudekerque (Northern France). So the oil, sauce and condiment company can now produce lightweighted bottles and use recycled PET (rPET).
