Sidel’s Response to the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010
On 1 January 2012, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010 ("SB 657") came into effect in the State of California. The new law requires companies doing business in California, subject to certain criteria, to disclose any efforts they have taken to eliminate human trafficking and slavery from their supply chains. As described by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime ("UNODC"), human trafficking is a crime against humanity, which:
"involves an act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harbouring or receiving a person through a use of force, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them."
SB 657 aims to make information available to consumers, to enable them to make more informed decisions regarding the products they buy and the companies with which they choose to do business.
